However they are not suitable for use up to 6 months when your baby is required to be moved into a cot, or a moses basket.

Mehack, a MFM home tester, was awed by the feature that this model comes with an adjustable bassinet that can be used around the home. It also features an option to rock manually. It was easy to assemble and it came with a travel bag.

Size

Cots and cot beds differ in terms of size in size, with cots smaller than cot beds. Cots can also convert into toddler beds. However, cots are usually only used by children up to the age of three. There are two sizes of wooden cots - big and standard that can be transformed into a toddler bed or cot. The larger one is a good idea if you want your child to sleep in it until they are at least three years old.

MFM mom home tester Jasmine was pleased that this bedside cot was a little bigger than a Moses basket but not too large for her baby's room. She says it's easy to get her baby in and out for night feeding or soothing and the quality is top-notch in comparison to other cots she's seen that feel flimsy.

Another home-based tester, Emily, likes how the Maxi-Cosi Lora can be used in a variety of ways It's a bassinet that lifts off that can be moved around the home, and it's a blast too. It also comes with a reflux incline option and a machine-washable liner that is breathable. It was also shortlisted in the 2021 Mother&Baby awards for the Best Cot Crib, Crib or Moses Basket. The Lora fits South African cot mattress unlike some international or European brands. This means that you do not need to purchase an entirely new mattress each time your baby grows. However, it requires a special bespoke bedding set (60x120cm). You can find the right mattress for your cot here.

Height

When you are choosing a cot for your bed choose one that can be elevated to a height that's comfortable for you to feed your babies. It also needs to be able of being dropped to the ground to allow you to lift your baby towards you for feedings at night or soothing. This feature is particularly useful when you're recovering from an operation such as a C-section. The Next2me Cot and Tutti Bambini can be adjusted to an maximum height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 can go up to 63cm, and the Knuma Hutch can be adjusted to 70cm.

Another thing to think about is the height you would like to set for the cot's base to be. While some mothers find it easier to lift their children out of standard Moses baskets when they are at the lowest height, others prefer having a higher base that gives them more stability. The Joie Roomie Glide is a popular choice, with one of our mum testers saying that it comes with a simple collapsible side that is easy to push down with the click of one button.

Remember that a bassinet/bedside sleeper should only be used until your baby can hold their head up unaided typically approximately 6 months. This is due to the danger of suffocation. It's also important to note that if you choose a bedside sleeper or bassinet that you can be converted into a crib it is necessary to start removing the sides when your child is ready for this to ensure that they don't climb out or get out of the bed.

Design

There are many different styles of cribs for beds with a range of styles from simple to lavish. The more expensive options could include features like a built-in night light or a soothing center that plays sounds and music and comes with two levels of vibrations to help soothe baby back to sleep, or a swivelling base that allows you to easily reach your baby for feedings. You may also find some models that can be converted to the form of a toddler bed or cot bed (or both), perfect when your child is ready to transition to a bigger bed.

The Tutti Bambini CoZee Air For instance, won Bronze at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot Moses Basket or Crib category. It is a swivelling base that allows you to take your baby to the crib and move them to the other side of the crib without getting out of bed. This is ideal for new mums recovering from Caesarean births or those who have to remain in bed for long periods of time. MFM mum home tester Jasmine was awed by this feature, saying that it was simple to use and made her baby much more manageable particularly after her c-section.

Another option is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which was awarded Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the category of Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket. It includes an easy-to-clean liner, reflux incline, and rocking function. It's bigger than other bedside cots for newborns cribs that we tested, but it folds down into its bag for travel, making it relatively compact when it's not in use.

MFM mum home test Leya also liked the functionality of this crib for bed, explaining how it was designed with babies and parents in mind. It has a great design that is extremely maneuverable and large bedside cot is extremely sturdy. The swivelling base of the bassinet is amazing because it allows you to move the bassinet from side-to-side and one of its sides can be let down to ease access - particularly for new mums who are recovering from C-sections,' she added.

Safety

A large bedside cot's main security characteristic is the fact that it is able to be raised or lowered so parents can reach their child to feed, comfort or change his or their nappies. This is ideal for mothers who are recovering from a C-section. You should look for an option that lets you lower the side of the bed with a simple button press. This will allow you to lift your child without getting out of the bed. This is particularly important as your baby grows older and more mobile. Beware of items that could increase the risk of injury or suffocation, such as duvets and pillowcases that can cause your baby to become overheated.

The CPSC's NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to problems with the product that included gaps between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents); fabric-sided enclosed openings (11 incidents); consumer misassembly or missing components (6 incidents) and miscellaneous other product-related issues (9 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC examined the possibility of introducing additional requirements to bedside cosleeper sleepers. For example the products would need to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets or at the very least, the maximum height requirements for the rails that are lowered. However the CPSC determined that these requirements would not be feasible or effective to reduce the amount of instances in which infants were entrapped between the bedside cot 6 months plus sleeper and an adult bed.

The majority of the reported incidents in the NPR included multi-use bedside sleepers that could be converted into different modes like bassinets and play yards. Many commenters suggested that CPSC include in the proposed rule a different provision for multiuse bedside sleepers to enable them to meet the minimum side-height requirement for bassinets through the use of an attachment that is removable and can be connected permanently or removed when the product is not being used as an actual bassinet.

The Commission will be examining these comments when it votes on the final rule, which is expected to be published in November of 2021.
